Clerics visit to Yar’Adua: least but not the last gambit

Ohakim, easy whichever way, you are not alone
Recently, I read one of the nation’s most respected news magazines story on you, Ohakim, the PPA governor of Imo state who decamped to the ruling PDP. According to the story, you, the governor, who is considered to be amongst the most performing governors in Nigeria in terms of delivering on the expectations of the good people of Imo state now resorts to the pursuit and harassment, capture or kidnap and intimidation and even physical torture of persons, to keep the truth about your performance from getting to the larger populace. This stories I dare say, would have been easy to dismiss as the handiwork of opposition politicians who are not comfortable with the style of your government and therefore, seeks a return to the “business as usual” model, if those claiming to be victims had been one or two and limited to politicians. But it is not so. It is instead a list that has ordinary journalist—mere wordsmith—as victims. And the single thread that runs through these victims of your intolerance of another view point is that they, at different times, place and means either said or wrote something that ran against your opinion and rating of the performance of your administration. But is there not an agreeable way of disagreeing with these persons? There certainly is. And what exactly is the grouse of these persons. Some of them claimed that your only achievement as their governor after almost three years is the planting and tendering of flowers in some streets and the evacuation of refuse. And that these achievements come at a cost that questions the benefit. Some more reasonable ones add that apart from this, that nothing else you embarked upon has been satisfactorily completed. An example they claim is a water scheme that you cause Yar'Adua to commission. According to them, for all its size and name, this scheme is no more than the water tanks found in private homes And That for the purpose of the commissioning, it was filled with water which flowed for as long as it took Yar'Adua to commission it. They equally claimed that projects for which you have plunge the state into debts, are in some cases, yet to commence while some others are at an unsatisfactory level of completion and this is almost a tear to the end of your reign. The most unbelievable of their claims is that projects that you inherited—on-going projects at different percentage of completion—from the Udenwa’s regime have not achieved any significant progress; be it in the simple matter of road construction and rehabilitation. These are very serious indictment for the chief manager of the human and material resources of a state particularly, when added to the allegation that you shift blame to ordinary appointees in your government. No doubt that for a demonstrative man, this is bound to elicit reactions. But such reactions need not include the use of a sledge hammer or your personal involvement in the physical torture of these “opposition elements” however raw your temper. Two options, very enlightened ones at that are available: if you honestly believe yourself, to have performed creditably well, relax hard and let the facts speaks for themselves. Should you want to encourage the facts to speak louder or even scream, you can adopt the Mr. Peter Obi, model. This simply involves filling buses with indigenes from all walks of life, adding a sprinkling of outsiders from the media, church, activist etc and embarking on a tour of all projects sites—completed and on-going.] But if you believe otherwise, there is no gain in waving your sword. Just ignore them and take solace in the fact that within the PDP family—peer review—you are not alone. Uduaghan, the governor of Delta state has got street light as his biggest achievement that has attained 100% completion in his almost three years stay. Everything else including those he inherited from his nephew, Ibori, remains on-going. Like yourself, he is erecting a government house. His critics are everywhere including within the government. For instance, recently, the state hose of assembly committee on public account under Mayaku, went round projects site in the state and returned a verdict that the contractors and not the governor, were largely incompetent Arabs. Uduaghan did not change the contractors nor demanded the reconstitution of the committee. There is a program on the state owned radio station that is very critical of government; the governor has not ordered it stoppage. Reality from another’s eye should not be that exhausting for you. Whether you are performing or not, be rest assured, you are not alone.
